Smoke from oil well fires forces drivers to use their headlights during the day. After Iraqi president Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990, a United Nations-backed counteroffensive, titled Operation Desert Storm, was launched to liberate the oil-rich country. A force of more than 500,000 American, British, French, Kuwaiti, and Saudi Arabian troops ousted Iraq's army from Kuwait in less than a week. The oil wells were set on fire by Iraqi troops as they retreated.
