[DATE POSTED: February 23, 2018]—Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan, received eight nominations at the 90th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and was the recipient of three Oscars for sound and film editing. The World War II drama depicts the historical 1940 evacuation of more than 350,000 Allied troops from the port of Dunkirk, France. Nolan, who also wrote the screenplay for Dunkirk, tried to make the look and feel of the movie as authentic as possible, electing to shoot the film in Dunkirk with thousands of extras and using some of the same boats that participated in the actual evacuation. Although the Battle of France was a military disaster for the Allies, the rescue at Dunkirk sparked the British war effort and enabled Winston Churchill to rally his people in the successful defense of England from Germany.

Use the Instruction and Background Resources in the drop-down menu on the left to guide students' library or classroom research into the historical events that inspired Dunkirk. The Background Essay provides an overview of key events during the evacuation, while related essays provide context to the Battle of France and a timeline of pivotal developments during the early stages of World War II. Primary sources include images that show historical moments during the evacuation, including the portraits of the British and French soldiers.
